A Very Happy Ending

The final chapter in the story of replacing the St Teath Village Community Bus recently moved to a swift conclusion.
No offers had been received to purchase the bus when suddenly fate started to take a hand. We learned that the Overseas Project Team of Rotary District 1290 (Cornwall, Plymouth and West Devon) had just started looking for a mini bus that could be taken to the Republic of Kosovo where it would act as a lifeline to patients requiring transport to distant hospitals for dialysis treatment.
Rotary have been assisting in this area of Kosovo for a number of years by delivering among other things fire engines, ambulances, training mechanics to keep aging vehicles going and by working to deliver essential supplies to schools and hospitals.
When the bus committee learned that the municipality of Rahovic was in one of the poorest areas of Kosovo and had suffered appalling damage to its infrastructure in the war with Serbia eleven years ago.
It did not take long to make the decision that if suitable, our bus could be donated to the Rotary and by so doing it would reflect the spirit and generosity of our village which enabled us to raise the funds to purchase our new bus.
The name St Teath will remain on the bus which, once it has been given a general overhaul, will be driven to Rahovic to continue its life in an area where the things we take for granted just do not exist.
We are sure that everyone will join with the committee in sending our love and best wishes to the people of Rahovic who will use our bus.

The New Bus Arrives

Over a year's fundraising culminated in the arrival of the brand new Community Bus, greeted by about 50 people outside the White Hart. To raise around £32,000 in a year is an outstanding achievement for a small village and the Committee are to be congratulated on their amazing efforts, many of which are illustrated below.
The Ford Transit 17 seat bus was supplied by Vospers and arrived outside the White Hart in the very capable hands of Bob Fox. After a 'staged' handover of the keys from Sean Mutton of Vospers, refreshments were supplied at the White Hart.

Fund raising to replace the existing bus
The target of £32,000 for a new bus was reached in November 2011, enough to buy a brand new bus. Congratulations to Peggy Crosley, Bob Fox and Hester Warman for organising such an effective campaign and to the many others who supported it.

The photo shows representatives from the St Teath Mini Bus Association receiving a cheque for £1000 from Lavinia Archer representing the Co-operative Membership Community Fund.
This award was made after consideration of the Association's application by a local South West committee of Co-operative members. The cheque was accompanied by a certificate and a commemorative plaque which will be displayed in the village. This generous donation will go towards the purchase of a new mini bus for the village and the Association wishes to thank the Co-op fund for their support.
Harvest Auction

Once again the people of St Teath turned out in force to support the annual harvest auction held at the White Hart Inn and organised by Barry Burton landlord extraordinaire!

Donations of produce ranged from home made preserves to potatoes, home made shortbread to cakes and other goodies. Gerald Blewett and Brian Kingdon once again were the fast talking auctioneers who did a splendid job of convincing the buyers to part with their hard earned cash. This include an amazing £45 for a box of shortbread and managing to auction a bread making machine twice.
This year the auction was held in order to raise money for the new bus fund which now stands at over £30000.
Once again a huge vote of thanks goes to the organiser, auctioneers, to all those who contributed items for auction and of course to those who bought the goods on sale.

Prize Draw

The draw was part of a fund raising effort which has been going since February this year. The present St Teath Community Bus needs replacing, and back in February the Bus Association Committee took the decision to try and raise £24,000 during the year. Astonishingly, the fund now stands at just over £30,000 and enquiries are underway as to purchasing a new bus with easy access.

900 tickets were sold for the prize draw making a profit of £600. Once again it was the marvellous members of the St Teath community who got involved by either buying or selling tickets or doing both. The lucky winners were Adrian Davies of St Teath who won £100, David Ray also of St Teath who won £50 and the two winners of £25 each were Mick Mountain of St Teath and Mr D Walsh from Edgware. Interestingly, when we phoned Mr Walsh to tell him of his win he was in Bogata, South America. So I guess you could say that St Teath has gone international.
Once again the Bus Committee and their chairman Peggy Crosley thanks everyone who helped achieve this great result.

Bingo Evening

Congratulations to Pearl Pluess, who organised a Bingo Evening in the Church Hall - raising over £1,400 for the new bus fund.
Big Breakfast - Celebrating 20 years of serving the people of St Teath.

Both villagers and visitors were made welcome at a Big Bus Breakfast. Served from 8.00am to 2.00pm, customers were able to sample a wide variety of breakfast fare ranging from the full Cornish, filled rolls, toast and tea to just a cup of lovely coffee.
As always the people of St Teath turned out in large numbers to support this event and to have a rest from whichever diet they might be on!
Organised by Hester Warman, a team of ladies and gentlemen cooked and served the delicious food throughout the day. The bus committee want to take this opportunity of thanking everyone involved. It was a wonderful event.
As well as a celebration, this event also raised over £500 for the St Teath new bus appeal which has now risen to over £26,000.
The bus committee hopes to reach their target of £32,000 by the end of December 2011 which would be a fantastic achievement by all the people of St Teath.

Cream Tea at Pencarey

The event was very well attended despite somewhat unseasonal weather* and featured the crowning of St Teath Carnival Royalty, live music from the Church Choir and from the Tintagel Orpheus Choir, a drum band, St Teath steam trains, delicious cream teas, races for children, a cake stall, tombola, wine and water. It raised nearly £900.

St Teath's fund raising efforts aimed at obtaining a new mini bus for the village took an important step forward when a cheque for £2,726 was handed over to the bus fund by representatives of the St Teath Voluntary Hospital Visiting Service.
This Voluntary Service was started in early 1986 by James Turner and Mrs Philo, who organised residents into a well ordered group whose aim was to provide help to those who required transport to visit their relatives in hospital. Since then. many villagers have taken advantage of this free service, but in recent times shorter stays in hospital and the increase in car ownership has meant it has been used less and less. Because of this, it was decided that the bus fund should benefit from the closure of the service.
