Rectory Ramblings, April 2008

This month we in the Church of England say goodbye to our spiritual leader in Cornwall, the Rt Rev Bill Ind. Bishop Bill, as he is universally and affectionately known, retires on March 30, so by the time you read this, he and his wife Frances will be beginning to enjoy their well-earned retirement. So many people, not just Anglicans, not just Christians, have been touched by his down-to-earth manner and simple care for ordinary people, and it is clear he will be very much missed in our Diocese and our County.

Now, the task begins of finding a successor. Well, in fact it has already begun: meetings, some public, some private, have already taken place and everyone's opinion has been sought both on the sort of person we should have and any particular names people want to suggest. Sadly, still in this day and age, 50% of the available candidates are ruled out by mere virtue of their gender. It is one of the biggest scandals of our age that the Church continues to refuse to allow women to be bishops and history will record the reluctance which many Churchmen have shown to amend this state of affairs with shame.

The job of a Bishop is, primarily, to be chief pastor of the people: to care for them, to lead them and to serve them. They are to be teachers and sources of inspiration and it is they, in partnership with local clergy, who have what is called the “cure of souls”: the responsibility for the spiritual welfare of all the people of the parishes. Even if you are not a regular churchgoer, the Bishop is still your Bishop and he is called to serve you just as much as those who do go to church.

Please pray for Bill and Frances, as they begin their retirement. Please also pray for those charged with the important job of finding his successor. And if you have any practical suggestions to make in terms of person or personality, there is still time. I will gladly pass on any suggestions you care to make.

Your vicar and friend,

Jim Benton-Evans.
